== Sentilo. A neutral opensource Sensor and Actuator Platform == Sentilo ((1) ) (“Sensor” in Esperanto) is an open source sensor and actuator platform designed to fit in the Smart City architecture of any city who looks for openness and easy interoperability. It’s built, used, and supported by an active and diverse community of cities and companies that believe that using open standards and free software is the first smart decision a Smart City should take. In order to avoid vertical solutions, Sentilo is designed as a cross platorm with the objective of sharing information between heterogeneous systems and to easily integrate legacy applications. Sentilo is the piece of architecture that will isolate the applications that are developed to exploit the information "generated by the city" and the layer of sensors deployed across the city to collect and broadcast this information. Sentilo was started in November 2012 by the Barcelona City Council, through the Municipal Institute of Informatics (IMI), and was conceived to define the strategy and the necessary actions in order to achieve global positioning Barcelona as a reference in the field of Smart Cities within the scope of a City-OS ((4) ) project.. Since then a number of municipalities and companies have joined the Sentilo Community ((2) ) Sentilo Architecture.jpg|Sentilo Architecture Sentilo is a bottom up approach to the Smart City concept by providing access to the data generated by the sensors and actuators spread through the city of Barcelona as a way to control raw data and break its organizational silos to let this data and logic flow across its different domains to become “smart”. The fact is that most current solutions are silos too, making cities too dependent on specific technologies, products or providers that create isolated compartments where applications cannot share their data among them. As a result, we get duplicity and multiplicity of data and infrastructures and an upward trend in investment and maintenance costs This tech silos can only be avoided providing horizontal and global platforms, as open as possible, that let the information flow across all domains, Sentilo does that for sensors. But is potentially a platform for any generic IoT (internet of things) platform or as IoE (Internet of Everything as defined by Cisco) ((5) ) platform. It is thought to run on premisses or as a PaaS. At the creation date of this article (Sept. 2015): 1. Sentilo, only in Barcelona city, has 9.800 sensors/actuators connected and has processed up to 520 Milion transactions. ((6) ) 2.
